‘A Mulholland Christmas Carol’ Returns to Bishop
Once again the Theatre of Note from Los Angeles will bring the satirical musical ‘A Mulholland Christmas Carol’ to the Owens Valley. The show tells the story of the birth of Los Angeles by casting water baron William Mulholland in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a California-set Christmas Carol. It presents a musical rendition of the LA water wars with Owens Valley that mixes harmonies, history and humor. This production will provide an acoustical, bluegrass take on the music. Complete with a live band, the troupe of 17 professional actors will fill the Bishop High School Auditorium with song and dance.
Every possible historical character appears during the show accompanied by song. William Mulholland sings of his love for the Los Angeles River and the building of the St. Francis Dam. The collapse of that dam and the tragedy of it take place right on stage! The original aria sung when Owens Valley water arrived in the San Fernando Valley is heard in full operatic fashion. Other players in the Owens Valley water story such as Teddy Roosevelt, Fred Eaton, J.B. Lippincott, John Westley Powell and Mary Austin make appearances and are cheered or booed. But the most moving roles are played by the ‘Owens Valley Folk’ as they sing in their innocence while their lives are changed forever. In 2005 the Owens Valley audiences understood every detail of the water history and laughed, hissed and occasionally teared up throughout the performance. Locals know what the Keeler ‘fog’ and the Alabama Gates are while audiences in Los Angeles often miss much of these subtle details.
This year’s show is hosted by Friends of the Inyo and the Theatre of Note with generous support from the Metabolic Studio and Lauren Bon. It is hoped that students and teachers of science, history, theater and music will all come out to enjoy the shows, especially the Sunday matinee with its Q&A with the actors, playwright and director. ‘A Mulholland Christmas Carol’ is good family fun with an added educational benefit. It will make us all proud to live in the Owens Valley.
In 2005 the show sold out in Bishop so this year two shows will be performed – Saturday, November 17 @ 8PM and Sunday, November 18 @ 2PM (with an hour after the show for Q&A with the cast, playwright Bill Robens and director Alina Phelan). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Pre-sale tickets are currently on sale at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/293080. Tickets will also be available at the door. For ticket questions please contact: mprather@lonepinetv.com

I have long been aware of the discrepancy between how I was affected by things, and who I was. This gap seemed un-bridgeable, but along with the emotional toll of such a schism, there existed a deeply rooted desire to evolve this predicament. Most of my work reflects the dichotomy of suffering: the acceptance of certain lies, while rejecting the pain of their existence. A tension that, as I found out, IS bridgeable, through connection with, and attention to that primal knowledge about what feels right, and what doesn’t (truthful sensing) –with acceptance, trust, and love. And throw in some humor, for goodness sake.

In the past, I worked in Brass, Copper, and Silver, on jewelry and miniature sculptures. Then the dimensions of my work grew, with the realization that size matters. There are two sculpture gardens, inhabited by my larger work, in Shoshone (Death Valley), CA, and Olancha, CA.

One of the premiere finger style guitarists of our time, Richard Smith, and his partner in life and music, the versatile and talented cellist Julie Adams, are returning to Bishop for an evening of jazz standards, gypsy swing, Scott Joplin Rags, and Chet Atkins-style guitar picking on Thursday, October 18, 7 p.m. at Inyo Council for the Arts.

The duo – Smith originally from England and Adams from Ohio – currently live on the outskirts of the Music City, Nashville. Since 2000, the husband-and-wife team have toured around the world, surprising audiences with Richard’s guitar genius and Julie’s lyrical style on the cello. With Richard’s ability to quickly master the varying styles of guitar greats including Django Reinhardt, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, and Tommy Emmanuel, there seems to be no limit to what he can accomplish on his guitar. Richard first met the “godfather of finger style guitar,” Chet Atkins, when Smith was just 11 years old, and Atkins invited him to perform on the stage with him at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London in front of an audience of about a thousand. Both the audience and Atkins sat stunned and applauded with wild enthusiasm for the young guitar virtuoso. By the time he reached his early twenties, both Chet Atkins and guitarist Jerry Reed began to refer to Richard Smith as their guitar “hero.” Apart from his virtuosity on the guitar, Richard is also an accomplished banjo and violin player. One of the most diverse and talented cellists on the music scene today, Julie Adams was classically trained at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Cincinnati Conservatory. Julie is also a Nashville session player and has been featured on a wide range of projects, from top ten albums to major film scores. In 2005, Julie performed with country legend Suzy Boggus on her album Beautiful Dreamer, which won the 2005 Grammy for Folk Album of the Year. Together, with Julie’s emotional depth and Richard’s flawless technique, they embark on a musical journey that leaves their audiences cheering with much deserved appreciation for this remarkable duo.

Richard Smith and Julie Adams perform Thursday, October 18, at 7 p.m. at Inyo Council for the Arts, 137 South Main Street in Bishop. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for Students. For more information contact the arts council at 873-8014.

Tickets $22 Adults, $18 Students/Seniors

Call 760 873-8014 for more information

Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word “eclectic.” Lindley, well known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band El Rayo-X, has long championed the concept of world music. The David Lindley electro-acoustic performance effortlessly combines American folk, blues, and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish musical sources. Lindley incorporates an incredible array of stringed instruments including but not limited to Kona and Weissenborn Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Turkish saz and chumbus, Middle Eastern oud, and Irish bouzouki. The eye-poppingly clad “Mr. Dave’s” uncanny vocal mimicry and demented sense of humor make his onstage banter a highlight of the show.

Louisiana’s finest, four-time Grammy-Nominated, world-renown Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Cajun music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from the southwest Louisiana, the Pine Leaf Boys, known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements, have breathed new life into Cajun music, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand. Being described in the New York Times as, “… the link that connects the young and the old generations,” and, “the best new, energetic, and fun Cajun band in a very long time,” the Pine Leaf Boys play the old fashion dance hall standards while making a priority to bring many of the more obscure songs of past masters into their repertoire and play them with gusto.

BIOGRAPHY

As a child, I liked to draw and took all the art classes I could in high school and college. I took art at the University of California where I learned the basics of drawing and painting but did not start painting in watercolor until I took my first workshop with Peggy Gray sometime in the 1980’s. I now work primarily in watercolor. I like to take classes occasionally to learn another medium, new techniques, and different perspectives.

Since 1976 I have lived with my husband James in Bishop, California where we raised one daughter. I worked in Bishop at various temporary jobs before obtaining my teaching credential and teaching elementary school in Bishop and Independence. I live here surrounded by mountains, forest, and desert all calling to be experienced through hiking, birdwatching, photography, and painting.

STATEMENT

When I paint, I try to combine looseness and fluidity with discipline and structure. Because I want to create a fresh spontaneous look, I usually start work with what is in front of me. Landscape combines my outdoor interests with art. I cannot say that I consciously work in a style. The painting or drawing emerges from the paper surprising me because I do not ever start with a completed image in mind. Success is completing a painting that teaches and surprises me.
